Cake updates!

YAY. So after my last entry, my cake was ok-ish. It rose, thankfully, but was burned on the outside and fine (if a little squashy) in the middle. I decided the way to fix this was to cook the cakes for longer, at a lower temperature. It worked! My moms cake came out quite well, which was ace, but I didn't really think about the fact i've never decorated a cake bigger than a cupcake! LOL. And even that usually turned out quite badly/dollopy.

Anyway, I decorated the cake, with butter cream Icing (which was really tasty even if i do say so myself ;) and then some white writing icing. It looked like a five year old did it.

Never mind, my mom was very pleased, and it tasted ok, which I guess is what mattered in the end!

Adventures in cake making

So, my moms birthday is coming up, and I decided (after hearing how much my friend paid for a cake for her mom) that it would be fun, and cheaper, and more personal to make a cake from scratch myself, and decorate it nicely.

Sure, great idea until you take into account the fact I havent actually made a cake from scratch since I was about 13. With the aid of my school teacher. With the appropriate utensils (electric whisk anyone?).

I decided before the main event I need to practise, so, after convincing the lovely SO to buy me everything I needed (apart from icing sugar - doh) I set about trying to make a cake worthy of my moms milestone birthday.
